Description
This beautiful Spanish-style stucco pink apartment building sits across the street from the Chicago lakefront at 5555 N. Sheridan Road. Built in 1927on the lakefront, it was an extension of the famous Edgewater Beach Hotel (1916) owned by the Connery family. The hotel and apartments boasted a beautiful view of Lake Michigan and the guests could leisurely stroll along the beachfront without hindrance. In the late 1950s, the city decided to extend Lake Shore Drive up to Hollywood Blvd between Lake Michigan and the Edgewater structures, effectively cutting off any direct access to the waters. In 1967, the hotel was torn down, leaving the apartment section to remind Chicagoans of the wonderful history of this section of Sheridan Road. When the day is a bit cloudy and the sun sneaks through a break in the dull, gray sky just right, this historical building pops out of the background, dominating the landscape with its wonderful architecture and color, reminding the passerby of bygone eras when stars walked the streets, sitting presidents stayed at the grand hotel, and famous big bands played their hearts out in ballrooms filled with names such as Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
