Description
The Green Heron is noted for its short legs. Unlike its cousins who stand on tall legs, wades in water, and are large in size, the Green Heron is small, stocky and usually hangs on branches along the water “fishing” for prey. Although this Green Heron doesn’t seem to have any green on it, if you zoom in you can see a little around the eyes. When the bird is hidden among leaves and branches, its feathers take on a darker color but if you were to see it close up, the head feathers are a dark green and you would notice that the side feathers have green in them also. They are also one of the only birds that bait their prey with insects and twigs, drawing the unsuspecting fish into its area so that the bird can grab it with its sharp, dagger-like beak.
