Description
The Grand Canyon South rim is open all year round. Unlike the North Rim, the only thing that would close it temporarily is if the roads in were blocked. Views from this rim are on a grand scale. In April, with clear skies and morning sun, you can see all the way to the north rim. In the distance, it looks pinkish instead of the deep reds and browns of summer under the hot sun.
The South Rim has hotels, restaurants, and shopping to entice the tourist to depart with his or her money. But the best part of this area is the hiking. Although the hiking paths are rarely closed, you do enter them at your own risk. When this image was take, winter was still in some places along the steep, narrow trails which made hiking into the canyon slippery and dangerous. No guard rails here. If you fall, there is nothing to catch you. But the views are spectacular and are well worth the effort, even if you only get half way down into the canyon.
Typically, to hike down into the canyon takes about six to eight hours. Coming back out takes a few hours longer because of the altitude changes. Many people make it a two day hike because 10 to twelve hours of hiking on a hot, sunny day takes a lot out of you. Many visitors only go roughly halfway, rest, and then head back to the top. Everything you bring into the canyon, you are required to take out. No garbage disposals here. So if you decide you would like to see the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon up close and personal on a trail, travel light and make sure you have plenty of water and energy bars on hand!
