Description
Outside Amarillo Texas is a restaurant with a huge sign that dates back to the early 1960s when Route 66 was still the main road leading into town. The Big Texan Steak Ranch was and still is a place for cowboys (and visitors) to have a satisfying hardy meal after a hard days work on the nearby ranches. Around 1962, the owner of the restaurant held a competition to see which cowboy could eat the most steak in an hour. At the end of the allotted time, one hungry cowboy had finished off 4.5 lbs. of steak (72 ounces), a baked potato, shrimp cocktail, a salad, and a bread roll. That satisfied customer won a free meal for his incredible appetite. And so the 72-ounce steak challenge was born and is still going on today. Anyone who can eat 4.5 pounds of steak in an hour will receive that steak for free. If there are any takers, this restaurant is located at 7701 Interstate 40 (the old Route 66), Amarillo Texas
