Description
The Doge's Palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice. He was the supreme authority in old Republic of Venice. Located in the San Marco Piazza, the palace dominates one section of the Piazza with its beautiful architecture and large structure. A tour of the palace reveals huge windows that give the visitor a gorgeous view of the Venice canals. What many don't think about when seeing this palace is of what lies beneath. This palace not only housed the Doge and his family, it also was the "courthouse" of the day. Large rooms held those who would hear and pass sentence on offenders brought before the Doge. After sentencing was brought down, the prisoner would be taken underground to jail cells to serve out his or her sentence.
This doorway is one of the jail doors that led into the cell area. Located inside a very small plaza, completely surrounded by the Doge's Palace, it is amazing to see the original work still on the door. The locks still work and the wood is still strong. Time has made very little difference is the strength of this door.
