Description
When I visited the Niagara Fort located in upper New York, I was amazed at the history of this place as well as the workmanship of the buildings. This fort is right at the mouth of Lake Lake Ontario on the Niagara River. Incidentally, this is the very same river that starts at Niagara Falls. The original fort on this site had been built by the French in 1678 to protect their interests in the New World and was called Fort Conti. It changed names in 1678 when a new fort was built and renamed Fort Denonville. The French held the fort until they lost it in the 19 Day Siege of 1759 called the Battle of Fort Niagra. The British took over the Fort Niagra and held it for 37 years. In 1796 the fort was officially handed over to American forces through the Jay Treaty. Unfortunately the Americans lost the fort during the War of 1812 again it was returned to the Americans with the Treaty of Ghent. To this day, it has been in American hands and is a national Park. Many a soldier has walked through this doorway over time. It is amazing to think that men from the 1600s walked through this doorway going about their business. This door represents the skills of the 1600 craftsman of the day. Looking closely, you can still see the chisel marks from the worker who shaped the panels of the door. It is solid and a bit heavy, although the hinges have been maintained quite well and swing easily.
