Artist's Description

Looking through an old, cracked, painted and smudged window in Old Fort Niagara, I felt transported to the past. This fort is located on the United States side of the Niagara River in upstate New York. Over many years, it bounced back and forth between France, Britain, and the United States until final ownership was given to the Americans in 1813.

The French Castle seen in the background was built by the French around 1726. The waters behind the building belong to Lake Ontario, and the Niagara River and Canadian banks are on the north side. Although the original stated intent of the building was to be a trading house for the French and native Iroquois Indians, it didnt take long before the building was turned into a barracks for soldiers with a small portion still remaining as a store.
