Niagara Fort is located in Upper New York State near Youngstown, on the eastern bank of the Niagara River. When standing on the northeast corner of the fort wall, one is standing on the shores of the mouth of the river and Lake Ontario. Built in 1678 by a a French Marquis and named Fort Denonville, it was abandoned in 1688 and the stockade torn down.
As time went on, the fort was integral in the French and Indian War when it fell to the British in a 19 day siege (July 1759). It was a loyalist base during the American Revolutionary War and was ceded to the United States after the American War of Independence in 1783. It wasn't until 1796 that American forces took over the fort.
The War of 1812 had the fort change hands back to the British in retaliation for the Americans sinking the Seneca, a Provincial Marine schooner. Eventually the fort returned to U.S. custody under the terms of Treaty of Ghent after the War of 1812.
