Traveling through Custer State Park in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, one is constantly amazed at the tall, spiraling rock formations created over time, made of granite. I drove on The Needles Highway which was completed in 1922 and is extremely narrow in parts throughout the drive. So much so that if two cars were going toward each other, one had to give way. And hopefully, there was space to pull over a bit to let the other car get by. If not, then someone had to back up until space was found along the edge of the road! Since it is a very rocky area with little shoulder room, it could be difficult to find a spot an area to get out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. The Needles Eye is a gorgeous rock formation and depending on what time of day you arrive, you can almost thread the sun through the eye. With the beautiful blue sky as a backdrop, this spot on the roadway is truly a remarkable thing to see.
