The Grand Canyon South rim is open all year round. Unlike the North Rim, the only thing that would close it temporarily is if the roads in were blocked. Views from this rim are on a grand scale. In April, with clear skies and morning sun, you can see all the way to the north rim. In the distance, it looks pinkish instead of the deep reds and browns of summer under the hot sun.
The South Rim has hotels, restaurants, and shopping to entice the tourist to depart with his or her money. But the best part of this area is the hiking. Although the hiking paths are rarely closed, you do enter them at your own risk. When this image was take, winter was still in some places along the steep, narrow trails which made hiking into the canyon slippery and dangerous. No guard rails here. If you fall, there is nothing to catch you. But the views are spectacular and are well worth the effort, even if you only get half way down into the canyon.
